VTS - VISUAL THINKING STRATEGIES
"... thinking through art"
School and community groups that visit Colgate University's Picker Art Gallery will enjoy a new kind of art encounter--Visual Thinking Strategies—that engages viewers in an interactive way. This technique plays down lecturing and instead highlights the viewers' own observations and responses. Through VTS, viewers discover that their eyes are the most essential tools to unlock the meaning of an artwork.
VTS is used at several museums in New York including the Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in Utica, the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, and the Everson Museum in Syracuse. It is also used for language development in the Utica, Liverpool, and Cincinnatus school districts.
The theory and scholarship that supports VTS is explained in depth at www.vue.org.
"What Do You See?", a demonstration video filmed at the Art Institute of Chicago, may be viewed upon request in the Picker Art Gallery Education Center. For information about becoming a docent at the Picker Art Gallery, please contact Melissa Davies, Educator, 228-7447 or mbdavies@mail.colgate.edu
