EDUCATION

Can the visual arts make the world a better place?
Dr. Harvey Picker, Colgate '36, thought that they could when in 1966, he dedicated the new art gallery at Colgate University to his mother, Evelyn Picker. Mrs. Picker, like her friend and fellow activist Eleanor Roosevelt, fervently believed in the humanizing force of the visual arts. It's only logical then, that the Picker Art Gallery would strive to connect children, the shapers of a better world, with the humanizing force of the visual arts.

The Picker Art Gallery has several education initiatives. Transportation stipends, kid-friendly docents, VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies), thematic tours, and art-making workshops, all make it possible for you and your students to have more and better access to the Picker Art Gallery's impressive resources than ever before. One thing that hasn't changed since 1966, though, is the excitement and uplift for children who engage with a real work of art and feel its humanizing force.
