May 2 through August 10, 2004 OUTSIDE DANA ARTS CENTER Dewitt Godfrey: Picker Sculpture 2004 DeWitt Godfrey, BA Yale 1982, MFA Edinburgh College of Art 1996, recently joined the Colgate Faculty as the new professor of sculpture in the department of Art and Art History. It has been said of his work that he "likes oxymorons and reversing expectations: he makes steel sculpture feel flimsy, or substantial and insubstantial at the same time, with great presence that is mostly emptiness." The sculptures are participants and performers, changing and adapting, fluid -- actually and metaphorically dynamic. Externally supported during installation, the pieces take their own form at the moment these supports are removed - literally shaped by the context and place where it lays. |
