Lecture: "The Last Expression:
Art and Auschwitz"

David Mickenberg (‘76) studied art history at the University of Wisconsin (‘79) and at Indiana University. Prior to his current position, he was the Director of the Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University from 1986-2001.

From 1994 to 2001 Mickenberg was the director of the research project, The Last Expression: Art and Auschwitz. The project was one of the fi rst endeavors to systematically look at works produced by victim-artists in concentration camps from 1941 to 1945. The results of the research project were seen in the exhibition of more than 200 drawings, paintings and prints presented at Northwestern University, Wellesley College and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2001/02. The accompanying book of the same title, and the interactive, multimedia Web site (lastexpression.northwestern.edu) provided additional opportunities to view the works and explore ideas and issues focused on by the project.

Co-sponsored by the Picker Art Gallery and the Art and Art History Department.
