EXHIBITION EXTENDED THROUGH AUGUST 7, 2005 May 8 - July 17, 2005 UPPER GALLERY ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM ENGAGED Works from the Dr. Luther W. Brady Collection of The Picker Art Gallery Dr. Luther Brady is without doubt one of the most distinguished physicians practicing in the world today. He has shaped the discipline of radiation oncology with over 600 publications, a landmark textbook, and leadership of every major society in his field. It is not hyperbole to suggest that his honors are too numerous to mention, but we should note that he has received twenty-four medals recognizing his contributions to medicine at home and around the world and has been celebrated in Sweden, Spain, Japan, Ecuador, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Germany, and England. He has received the American Medical Association's Distinguished Service Award Gold Medal. One might stop there except that, like a handful of world figures, his achievements in science are complemented by an extraordinary interest in and knowledge of art. One thinks of the economist Maynard Keynes bringing Cezannes to England in the early years of the twentieth century. For Luther Brady music, and particularly opera, is a central force, leading him to serve on a number of important boards, including the Sante Fe Opera Company and the Opera Company of Philadelphia. Equally, Luther Brady's passion is for the visual arts, and here too he has been a trustee and a contributor. Indeed the Philadelphia Museum of Art have named a curatorship in Japanese art in honor of Dr. Brady and, at George Washington University, the Luther Brady Art Gallery stands as a testament to his importance for the arts in America. We at Colgate owe Luther Brady an enormous debt of gratitude, as we do Dewey Mosby who, as director of The Picker Art Gallery for more than twenty years, was in conversation with Luther Brady around his collection and his generous attention to the Picker. You who see this show, "Abstract Expressionism Engaged: xxxxx," will of course see Luther Brady's eye, remembering as you do that it chose when works were new and not canonical. At Colgate, Dr. Brady has received the most important honors the University can bestow: an honorary doctorate in 1988 and membership in the James B. Colgate Society. What we can add now, as we see and celebrate a part of the collection he has brought to The Picker Art Gallery, is simply our deeply felt thanks. In a world which values the expertise of specialists, Dr. Luther Brady has made his mark. In a world in which, less frequently, the two cultures about which C. P. Snow spoke are in conversation, Luther Brady has equally made his mark. The great physician poets, like William Carlos Williams, taught us that science and humanism are, when united, as uncompromisingly glorious as "The Young Housewife." Colgate University thanks Luther Brady for enriching our college and, yes, our lives. |
