May 15 - August 23, 2006 UPPER GALLERY Art Nouveau Glass and Pottery from the Syracuse University Art Collection At the end of the nineteenth century, many artists and designers in Europe and the United States sought new sources of inspiration. Dissatisfied with earlier revivals of Classical and Renaissance styles, they looked to nature and to the example of Asian art for fresh aesthetic models. The result was Art Nouveau, a style that emerged in the 1880s and continued through the First World War. Characterized by asymmetrical, sinuous lines reminiscent of botanical forms, this decorative style attained its finest expression in the mediums displayed here – glass and pottery. The exhibition features exquisite objects crafted by celebrated masters of the style, including works in glass by Émile Gallé and Louis Comfort Tiffany. The exhibition was organized by the Syracuse University Art Collections. |
