Plaster Doors of Pisa:
Solving a Medieval Puzzle

During the spring 2006 semester, students in Professor Judith Oliver's seminar in medieval art investigated a collection of plaster casts in the Picker Art Gallery's permanent collection. Such three-dimensional reproductions of sculpture and architecture once formed the heart of museum and university art collections, but fell out of favor in the early 20th century, and were often discarded. Colgate is fortunate to have preserved these increasingly rare artifacts of art history's history.

Plaster Doors of Pisa features 14 panels cast from the Cathedral of Pisa's monumental 12th-century bronze doors. The exhibition explores each panel's scene, and places the doors' iconographic program within a broad European context. The exhibition was curated by Professor Judith Oliver and her students: Matthew Anaya, Alexandra Kislevitz, Jessica Minck, Leslie Petsoff, Glenna Wiley, all Class of 2007.

Information about other historic collections of plaster casts is available from The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America.
