May 15 - November 5, 2006 MAIN GALLERY James McNeill Whistler and the Evolution of Etching Controversial in his lifetime but celebrated ever since, James McNeill Whistler's sketch-like, atmospheric etchings set a new standard for the technique. This exhibition features a recently-acquired etching by Whistler, Garden (1879-80) from the artist's second Venice set (Twenty-Six Etchings, published 1886-87), purchased with funds donated by Eileen Guggenheim and Russell Wilkinson, Class of 1970. By placing this expressive etching alongside earlier and later works by accomplished technicians such as Callot, Rembrandt, Haden, and Pennell, Whistler's distinct contribution fully appears. The exhibition was curated by Megan Boyer, Class of 2006. |
