Prints of the Northern Renaissance

This installation features eight German and Dutch prints from 1470 to 1521, among them several important new acquisitions as well as long-time favorites of the Picker Art Gallery collection. These woodcuts and engravings are by some of the most celebrated artists of the period, such as Albrecht Dürer, Martin Schongauer, and Lucas van Leyden. They present religious, allegorical, mythological, and historical subject matter in images inspiring devotion and study.

The focus of the selection is on the work of Albrecht Dürer, one of the most versatile and innovative masters working with prints. Dürer explored a new range of expressions. He helped to create a market for art by selling his graphic work through his family members. And, after traveling to Italy in 1494 and 1506/07, he promoted a new and influential artistic ideal: the Renaissance.

Organized in conjunction with Prof. Judith Oliver's class
